Aquí y allá is an essay film that studies what being at home means. The filmmaker uses photographs, maps and Google Earth to connect places around the globe, not just from her own past, but also from the complex migratory history of her family that stretches back to Hitler-era Germany and Mao’s China. Reality and the virtual prove equally confusing: however much you zoom in, you never get closer to home.
Born 1991 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Director trained at Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, at Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV) in Cuba and at Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains in France. In her work, Melisa Liebenthal seeks to intertwine the fields of essay film and fiction narrative, through light-hearted stories that come to play with a reflection on image, identity and the gaze of others. Her films have been awarded in IFFR, BAFICI, Punto de Vista and Queer Lisboa and screened in festivals such as Torino, Edinburgh, Seattle and Oberhausen. She is currently developing her second feature film, El rostro de la medusa (The face of the jellyfish), with the support of Hubert Bals Fund, BAL – BAFICI, Los Residentes (Paraguay) and the National Arts Fund of Argentina.
