Sentimental Education is a melancholic film. Jorge Juárez cannot look at a crib without thinking about a tomb, he thinks beauty hurts; and that is why it is the first love that hurts, not the last. It is also a comical film, while, –even though, damn its humor– at the same time it is a film on Spain. Let us say that it is the auto-biographic, fictitious film of a melancholic comic who, as most comical figures, makes films to carry on. It is also an Asturian and Bulgarian film, shot generously throughout six years, which holds many tones and pictures: it begins with a celebration of cinema and the 35 mm movie theater, pathetic or exciting depending on the age of the spectator, and it ends as a juvenile indie and yankee film, while, midway, it goes from science fiction to terror and, above all, love and politics, which are the same.
