Jia Zhang-ke.

Jia Zhang-ke, Chinese director, writer and producer, born in 1970 in Fengyang, Shanxi Province of China. After attending the Department of Screening Writing and Cinema Studies of Beijing Film Academy in 1993, he became a film screenwriter in 1995. He now lives in Beijing.
In 1998, his first feature film Xiao Wu won the Wolfgang Prize, Netpac Award of 48th Berlin International Film Festival The International Forum of New Cinema. In 2006, Jia’s Still Life received the Golden Lion Award in the 63rd Venice International Film Festival and the Best Foreign Film of Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards 2008. The New York Times appraised Jia as “today’s world best director under age 40”. Jia also acted as the president of jury for Cinéfondation and short film competition, Cannes International Film Festival 2007.
Furthermore, Jia Zhang-ke was identified as one of the Young Global Leaders, World Economic Forum 2007, Davos. In 2008, he received the tribute from Festival du Film Asiatique de Deauville. In the same year, The Guardian appraised Jia Zhang-ke as one of the “50 people who could save the planet”. In 2009, he was awarded the Officer Order of Arts and Letters of France and the tribute from Festival de Cine de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In 2010, Toronto International Film Festival awarded him the “directors of the decade”. The same year, he received the Leopard of Honor of the 63rd Festival del film Locarno. In 2015, he was awarded with Carrosse d’Or during the 68th Cannes Film Festival.

Synopsis.

In China, three unemployed Shanxi laborers are looking for work. Their last hope is to be employed as performers in a surreal amusement park.
